Fly Away

Golden helicon (Heliconius hecale) on Black Eyed Susan flower. Portland Oregon Zoo

The near-sighted Mr. Magoo

caterpillar–if he only knew

what waited…beyond the

darkness of the cocoon.

Not that he’s thinking,

I wish that I could fly,

I wish that I could fly-

he’s content to be

eating his green leafies

maintaining the momentum

of existence.

Maybe on some level

he knows: the end (of

crawling) is near and

that he will spend most

of the rest of his span

off the ground in the

air leaving green for

all the colors of the

rainbow and beyond.
